Who is included in the class?
The notice lists 13 covered schools and their specific date ranges. It also lists former names for several schools. Check the complete list and dates in Question 2 of the notice before making a claim.
- You must have been alive on December 8, 2015.
- You must have lived at one of the listed Training Schools during that school’s listed operating period.
- The notice excludes people who resided at Grandview Training School, St. Joseph's Training School for Boys, St. John's Training School, Ontario Training School for Girls in Toronto, Central Wardship Planning Unit, Elmcrest School, or Champlain School.
How are the compensation levels set up?
A claim must be approved by the Claims Administrator before compensation is paid. The stated amounts are not guaranteed individual payments.
- Track 1: $5,000 for eligible claimants who experienced harm at a Training School.
- Track 2: $7,500, $15,000, $25,000, $50,000, or $100,000, depending on the type and seriousness of the physical or sexual harm or qualifying solitary confinement described in the notice.
- A Track 2 claimant can receive only the highest Track 2 level their approved claim qualifies for.
- The notice says all awards may be reduced proportionately if needed.
What harms are covered by Track 2?
For this settlement, a Serious Physical Injury includes hospitalization, permanent or demonstrated long-term injury, impairment or disfigurement, broken bones, or a serious temporary incapacity requiring at least four days of bed rest or infirmary care. A Serious Sexual Assault means non-consensual oral, vaginal, or anal penetration.
- The $7,500 level covers a physical assault causing an observable injury, such as a black eye, bruise, or laceration, or specified periods of dissociation or solitary confinement.
- The $25,000 level is for a physical assault causing a Serious Physical Injury.
- The $15,000, $50,000, and $100,000 levels cover different categories of non-consensual sexual harm described in the notice.
Does the date I attended affect which compensation track I can use?
- If you attended a Training School only before September 1, 1963, you may seek compensation under Track 1 only.
- You cannot seek Track 2 compensation if all of your attendance was before that date.
What do I need to do to make a compensation claim?
The notice does not provide the full web address for the online Claims Portal. It identifies the Claims Administrator’s website and contact information for getting the form or help with the process.
- Complete the Claim Form fully.
- Submit it to the Claims Administrator online, by mail, or by email by September 22, 2027.
- You can download a PDF form, ask the Claims Administrator for a paper form, or complete the form online.
Do I need records or other documents for my claim?
The notice gives several options for showing estate authority, including certain estate certificates, a will appointing the estate trustee, or—in limited circumstances—a witnessed declaration together with proof of relationship.
- For a claim made for yourself, you do not need Training School records or documents proving the harm you experienced.
- If you claim for the estate of a Class Member who died on or after December 8, 2015, you need a death certificate and documents showing you have authority to act for the estate.
- If you claim for a legally incapable Class Member, you need documents showing that you are their legally recognized guardian.
Can I be reimbursed for professional support costs related to my claim?
- Only Track 2 claimants may request this reimbursement.
- It can cover up to $1,500 in fees charged by a doctor, psychologist, social worker, counsellor, or therapist for support services related to preparing and delivering the claim.
- You must submit a Support Reimbursement Form with all receipts or invoices.
How can I request my Training School records?
- Submit a Training School Record Request Form by October 22, 2026.
- Ontario says requests received by that date will be handled on an expedited basis and produced no later than March 22, 2027.
- You do not need these records in order to make a compensation claim.
What happens if I do not make a claim?
- You will not receive money from the settlement if you do not submit a claim.
- Unless you opted out earlier or submit an Opt-Out Form by March 22, 2027, you will release related legal claims against Ontario and cannot sue Ontario independently about your Training School experiences.
- You still need to submit a completed claim form even if you previously gave information to Class Counsel or another lawyer.
What does opting out mean, and what is the deadline?
- To opt out means removing yourself from this class action so you keep the ability to bring your own individual lawsuit against Ontario about your Training School experience.
- Submit a signed Opt-Out Form by March 22, 2027.
- If you opt out, you cannot claim money from this settlement.
